Presentation Details: In this presentation we will revisit both why we take a history and what it involves and some tips of how we can ensure we gain as full history as possible. The aim of history taking is to gain information from all involved, both human and non-human, and the environment both past and current, and consideration of the future. An accurate a history as possible is essential for an accurate behavioural diagnosis to be made. An accurate behavioural diagnosis is essential to the development of a behaviour modification programme that is appropriate for the animal and its humans in their circumstances. History taking is a skill that involves observational skills, questioning and listening skills, ‘experimental’, synthesis and analytical skills. All of which need employing pretty much simultaneously! Due to time constraints the talk will touch on, but only very briefly, how history taking links to differential diagnosis and the development of a suitable behaviour modification plan.
