Presented By Jean Donaldson, originally broadcast on 20/08/2020
Is there such a thing as over-socialization? What is “arousal” and is it a useful term? Should we strive to reduce or eliminate errors when dogs are learning? How should we curate and monitor play opportunities for puppies, and for dogs?
In most jurisdictions, dog training and behavior counseling are unregulated, and where they are regulated, there is usually not a mandate for evidence-based practice. This has resulted in fertile ground for fads to take hold. This webinar will look at how research on cognitive biases makes dog behavior practitioners susceptible to untested or demonstrably untrue ideas and practices.
Presenter Information
Jean is the founder and principle instructor of The Academy for Dog Trainers. The celebrated its twentieth anniversary in 2019. She is a four-time winner of The Dog Writers’ Association of America’s Maxwell Award. In 2017, Jean was recruited to create Dog Training 101 for The Great Courses.
Born in Montreal, Canada, Jean founded the Montreal Flyball Association, and Renaissance Dog Training, the first positive reinforcement-based school and counseling service in the province. Her own dogs and dogs she has trained have earned numerous titles and wins in a variety of dog sports, including OTCh, TDX, HIT and FDCh. While a student, she worked as an adoption counselor at the Montreal SPCA and later served on its Board of Directors. Before founding The Academy, Jean did exclusively referral aggression cases for six years. She lives in Oakland, California, with her dog, Brian, adopted in 2015.

Raising Wolfdogs; Getting to know the dogs that look like wolves
Presented by: Gemma Krzesinska
Wolfdogs are becoming increasingly popular but they aren’t well known and the information about them is often out of date or plain uneducated. The World of Lupines Foundation is working to not only increase education around wolfdogs of all breeds and types but to also be the ethical guideline for raising wolfdogs and breeding the Lupine breed specifically using scientifically backed methods.
I will talk about my experiences breeding and raising Lupine dogs, the differences noticed between them and your more common dog breeds and the steps taken to ensure they get the best possible start.
